Martin Luther King Jr. was a pivotal figure in the American Civil Rights Movement. His leadership, eloquence, and unwavering commitment to nonviolent resistance helped to bring about some of the most significant social changes in American history.

King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He was the son of a Baptist minister, and he was raised in a religious household. King attended Morehouse College, where he studied sociology and theology. He later earned a doctorate in theology from Boston University.

In 1954, King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. It was there that he began to emerge as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1955, he led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which successfully challenged the city's segregated bus system.

King's nonviolent approach to resistance quickly gained attention and support. He was invited to speak at churches, rallies, and other events across the country. In 1963, he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington. The speech helped to galvanize the Civil Rights Movement and inspire a new generation of activists.

King's work was not without its challenges. He was often arrested and threatened with violence. In 1968, he was assassinated by James Earl Ray in Memphis, Tennessee. King's death was a major setback for the Civil Rights Movement, but his legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
