In this astonishing account of courage, skill, and resilience, Top Sharp Shooter N. J. 'Jack' Jackson tells his remarkable story as a rear gunner in Bomber Command during World War II.

From his humble beginnings in a small village, to his intense training and his eventual posting to a frontline squadron, Jackson's journey is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the men who fought in the air war.

Life Before the War

N. J. 'Jack' Jackson was born in a small village in Lincolnshire, England, in 1922. The son of a farmer, he grew up with a love of the outdoors and a strong work ethic.

When war broke out in 1939, Jackson was eager to join the fight. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force and began training as a rear gunner.

Training

The training for rear gunners was intense. Jackson had to learn how to operate the Browning machine gun, as well as how to aim and fire it accurately.

He also had to learn how to survive in the cramped and dangerous conditions of a bomber turret. The training was tough, but Jackson was determined to become the best rear gunner he could be.

Operational Service

In 1942, Jackson was posted to a frontline squadron flying out of RAF Scampton. He flew on bombing missions over Germany, France, and Italy.

Jackson quickly proved himself to be a skilled and deadly rear gunner. He shot down several enemy aircraft, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery.

Jackson survived the war, and continued to serve in the Royal Air Force until 1947. He then returned to civilian life, where he worked as a farmer and a businessman.

Legacy

N. J. 'Jack' Jackson was one of the most highly decorated rear gunners in Bomber Command. His story is a testament to the courage, skill, and resilience of the men who fought in the air war.

Jackson's story is also a reminder of the importance of remembering those who fought for our freedom. We owe a debt of gratitude to these brave men, who risked their lives to protect our way of life.
