Grant: The Biography of Ulysses S. Grant by Ron Chernow is a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of one of the most important figures in American history. Chernow's book is a sweeping and authoritative account of Grant's life and career, from his humble beginnings in Ohio to his rise to the presidency during the Civil War.
Grant was a complex and contradictory figure. He was a brilliant military strategist who led the Union to victory in the Civil War, but he was also a heavy drinker and a poor businessman. He was a man of great ambition, but he was also plagued by self-doubt. Chernow's biography captures all of these complexities, and he paints a portrait of Grant that is both warts and all and deeply sympathetic.
Grant was born in Ohio in 1822. He was the son of a tanner, and he grew up in poverty. He attended West Point, but he was not a particularly good student. After graduating, he served in the Mexican-American War, where he distinguished himself as a brave and resourceful officer.
When the Civil War broke out, Grant was living in Illinois. He volunteered to serve in the Union Army, and he quickly rose through the ranks. He was a brilliant strategist, and he won a series of key victories that helped to turn the tide of the war. In 1864, he was appointed commander of all Union forces. He led the Union to victory at the Battle of Appomattox Court House, and he accepted the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
After the war, Grant was elected president of the United States. He served two terms, from 1869 to 1877. During his presidency, he oversaw the Reconstruction of the South, and he worked to protect the rights of African Americans. He also signed the Alaska Free Download treaty, which added Alaska to the United States.
Grant's presidency was not without its controversies. He was accused of corruption, and his administration was plagued by scandals. He was also criticized for his handling of the Reconstruction process. However, historians generally agree that Grant was a successful president who helped to heal the wounds of the Civil War and to rebuild the nation.
Grant died in 1885. He is buried in New York City. He is remembered as one of the greatest generals in American history, and his biography by Ron Chernow is a classic work of historical scholarship.
