Wilt Chamberlain was a basketball player unlike any other. He was a physical specimen, standing 7'1" and weighing 275 pounds. He was also incredibly athletic, with a vertical leap of 48 inches. Chamberlain was a force on the court, dominating both offensively and defensively.
Chamberlain was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1936. He began playing basketball in high school, and quickly became one of the best players in the country. He was recruited to play for the University of Kansas, where he led the Jayhawks to two NCAA championships.
Chamberlain was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors with the first overall pick in the 1959 NBA Draft. He immediately made an impact, averaging 37.6 points and 27 rebounds per game in his rookie season. Chamberlain led the Warriors to the NBA championship in 1967, and was named the league's Most Valuable Player.
Chamberlain played for 14 seasons in the NBA, and retired in 1973. He finished his career with 31,419 points, 23,924 rebounds, and 4,643 assists. He was a 13-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA First Team selection, and 10-time NBA rebounding champion.
Chamberlain was a larger-than-life figure, both on and off the court. He was known for his flamboyant lifestyle and his outspoken personality. He was also a pioneer for African-American athletes, and helped to break down racial barriers in the NBA.
