The Frisbee is one of the most popular and iconic toys in the world. It's a simple flying disc that can be thrown, caught, and played with by people of all ages. But how did the Frisbee come to be? And who invented it?
The answer to those questions is a bit complicated, but it starts with a pie plate.
The Pie Plate Origins of the Frisbee
In the early 1900s, pie plates were a common household item. They were used to bake pies, of course, but they were also used for a variety of other purposes, including as toys. Children would often flip pie plates back and forth to each other, or they would throw them at targets.
In 1948, a college student named Walter Frederick Morrison was flipping a pie plate around his dormitory room when he noticed that it flew unusually well. He began to experiment with different ways to throw the pie plate, and he soon realized that he could make it fly in a variety of ways. He also noticed that the pie plate was more durable than other toys, and it could withstand being thrown against hard surfaces.
Morrison decided to patent his invention, and in 1951 he received a patent for the "flying disc." He named his company Wham-O, and he began to manufacture and sell flying discs to the public.
The Frisbee Takes Flight
The Frisbee quickly became a popular toy, and it was soon being used in a variety of games and sports. In 1957, the first Frisbee tournament was held, and in 1964 the first Frisbee golf course was opened.
The Frisbee has continued to grow in popularity over the years, and it is now used in a wide variety of sports and activities. It is also used in artistic expression, such as disc freestyle and disc dancing.
The Frisbee Today
The Frisbee is a global phenomenon, and it is enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a simple toy that can be used for a variety of purposes, and it is a symbol of fun and freedom. The story of the Frisbee is a fascinating one, and it is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of its inventor, Walter Frederick Morrison.
