History of the White House

The White House was originally known as the President's House. It was designed by James Hoban, who won a competition to design the new home for the President of the United States. The cornerstone of the White House was laid on October 13, 1792, and the building was completed in 1800. The White House was first occupied by President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, in 1800.

The White House has been renovated and expanded several times over the years. The most significant renovation was undertaken by President Harry S. Truman in the 1940s. Truman's renovation included the addition of the East and West Wings, as well as the construction of the Oval Office.

Visiting the White House

Visitors should arrive at the White House Visitor Center, located at 1450 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, at least one hour before the desired tour time.

Visitors to the White House will be able to see the following rooms:

  • The Blue Room
  • The Red Room
  • The State Dining Room
  • The Oval Office

Visitors will also be able to see the White House gardens and the South Lawn.
