The history of the United States Navy is often recounted through the lens of heroic battles, technological advancements, and prominent admirals. However, there is an equally compelling narrative that has long been overlooked: the contributions of soldier mariners, diverse individuals who served as both soldiers and sailors, shaping the country's naval history in profound ways.

The Birth of the Continental Navy

In the tempestuous years leading up to the American Revolution, the need for a continental navy became evident. In 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of a fleet to harass British shipping and defend the fledgling nation's coastline. This nascent navy, known as the Continental Navy, would face formidable challenges, not only from the mighty British Royal Navy but also from internal divisions.

The Role of Soldier Mariners

Amidst the tumult, a unique group of men emerged: soldier mariners. These individuals, drawn from a diverse array of backgrounds, possessed both military expertise and maritime skills. They were not merely sailors who had fought on land or soldiers who had embarked on ships. Rather, they were a hybrid force, capable of transitioning seamlessly between land and sea operations.

Their versatility proved invaluable. In 1776, a squadron of row galleys commanded by Benedict Arnold and manned by soldier mariners from Rhode Island played a pivotal role in the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain. By employing a combination of military tactics and naval maneuvers, they delayed a superior British force, allowing the American army to retreat.

The Contributions of African American Mariners

One of the most significant yet underappreciated aspects of soldier mariners' contributions is the role played by African Americans. Despite facing pervasive discrimination, African Americans served in both the Continental Army and Navy, often as sailors. Their participation was essential to the success of the naval war effort.

In fact, the first recorded instance of an African American boarding and capturing a British vessel occurred in 1777, when a group of soldier mariners led by Captain James Forten of Philadelphia seized the British brigantine Nancy. Forten's bravery and leadership inspired other African Americans to join the fight for independence.

The War of 1812

During the War of 1812, soldier mariners once again played a crucial role, particularly on the Great Lakes. In the Battle of Plattsburgh, soldier mariners serving under Commodore Thomas Macdonough employed their combined skills to outmaneuver and defeat a larger British squadron, safeguarding control of Lake Champlain.

The Long Shadow of Their Legacy

The legacy of soldier mariners extends far beyond the battles they fought. Their diverse backgrounds and contributions helped shape the very foundation of the United States Navy. They demonstrated the importance of inclusivity and the value of tapping into the strengths of individuals from all walks of life.

Their stories are a testament to the resilience and determination of those who fought for the birth of a new nation. By shedding light on their experiences, we gain a deeper understanding of the complex tapestry of American history and the contributions of unsung heroes.

The diverse soldier mariners who shaped the country, formed the Navy, and rowed its ships played an instrumental role in the founding of the United States. Their contributions, often overlooked or marginalized, are a testament to the strength of diversity and the power of human ingenuity. By uncovering their stories, we honor their legacy and inspire future generations to embrace the values of courage, inclusivity, and service.
