The Characters

The protagonist of The Help is Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a young white woman who is struggling to find her place in society. Skeeter is intelligent and ambitious, but she is also painfully aware of the injustices that are happening all around her. When she learns that her beloved maid, Aibileen Clark, has been fired for speaking out against the white family she worked for, Skeeter decides to write a book that will give voice to the experiences of the black maids in Jackson, Mississippi.

Aibileen Clark is a middle-aged black woman who has worked as a maid for white families for over twenty years. Aibileen is a kind and compassionate woman, but she has also seen the ugly side of racism firsthand. She is determined to help Skeeter write her book, even though she knows it could put her in danger.

Minny Jackson is a young black woman who is known for her quick wit and sharp tongue. Minny has a difficult life, but she never loses her sense of humor. She is the first maid to agree to help Skeeter with her book, and her stories are some of the most powerful and moving in the novel.
