Early Life and Career
Tausret was born around 1289 BC to Pharaoh Seti II and Queen Tausert. She was the younger sister of Pharaoh Siptah, who died in 1215 BC at the age of 16. Tausret was married to Siptah's vizier, Bay, who became pharaoh after Siptah's death. Bay died in 1204 BC, and Tausret became regent for her young son, Seti-Merneptah.
Reign as Pharaoh
Seti-Merneptah died in 1194 BC, and Tausret became pharaoh in her own right. She was the first female pharaoh since Hatshepsut, who had reigned over a century earlier.
Tausret's reign was a difficult one. Egypt was facing economic decline and political instability. The country was also threatened by invasion from the north and south.
Despite the challenges, Tausret was a capable ruler. She oversaw the construction of several temples and palaces, including the Temple of Tausret at Karnak. She also reformed the government and made some changes to the religious practices of Egypt.
Death and Legacy
Tausret died in 1189 BC. She was buried in the Valley of the Kings, but her tomb was later looted and destroyed. As a result, little is known about her life and reign.
In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in Tausret. Scholars are now studying her reign and her role in Egyptian history. Tausret is finally being recognized as an important figure in Egyptian history, and her story is an inspiring one for women everywhere.
