McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, in 1843. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was elected to Congress in 1876. He served as governor of Ohio from 1892 to 1896, and was elected president in 1896.
McKinley's presidency was marked by a period of economic prosperity. He signed the Dingley Tariff into law, which raised tariffs on imported goods. This helped to protect American businesses and led to a period of economic growth. McKinley also oversaw the annexation of Hawaii and the Spanish-American War, which expanded the United States' empire.
McKinley was assassinated in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. His death was a national tragedy, and he is remembered as one of the most successful presidents in American history.
McKinley's Legacy
McKinley's legacy is complex and multifaceted. He is remembered as a successful president who led the United States through a period of growth and prosperity. However, he is also criticized for his imperialism and for his role in the Spanish-American War.
Despite the controversies, there is no doubt that McKinley was a major figure in American history. His policies helped to shape the United States into the global superpower that it is today.
